God’s Battles

This is going to be a mini-rant. Lol. I don’t really rant on this blog but this just got me. I was going to post this tomorrow but I am very impatient so I’ll just go ahead and post it because I am very passionate about this for some reason. (Mother Nature is passing through. Lol. TMI? I’m sorry)

I was on Linda Ikeji’s blog about two days ago just to get the daily scoop on what’s going on in Nigeria and in the world as well and one of the stories was that the actress, Laverne Cox was the first transgendered person to be on the cover of TIME Magazine. She spoke on how she was being bullied because of her orientation. 

Now, trusting my Nigerian people to always have something to say, I decided to look through the comments. One of the first things I saw was: ‘WHO IS BULLYING WHO HERE? YOU MISS TRANSGENDER. YOU ARE BULLYING GOD WHO TOOK HIS TIME TO MAKE YOU A MAN. YOU, UNGRATEFUL BRAT! (This is just an excerpt from the comment).

Now, I try my very best to not say things about these sort of topics because they are very confrontational (Confrontational? Not sure if that’s the right word but I mean that many people have different things to say about them) but I couldn’t help but react because of this comment.

My first reaction was laughter. I laughed so hard, I probably woke up my housemates. How could you say a person is bullying God? Think about it guys. Lol..I laughed again.

Then I started getting really angry and I think I got a bit more angry than I should have because of this thing called ‘PMS’..LOL! I was literally shouting at the screen.

This is why I got really upset. Listen, God is not asking you to fight his battles for Him. He is not asking you to judge another for Him. That is HIS JOB, not yours.

YOUR JOB is to live according to His word to the best of your ability. Don’t look down on others because to be honest, you are not any better. The fact that you don’t agree with someone else’s lifestyle does not give you the AUDACITY to judge them. Who do you think you are to sit down and pass judgements? Is that what God sent you to do on earth?

At the end of the day, all sins will end up in the same place. Why are you disturbing yourself over someone else’s life? FACE YOUR OWN. Life is a race and the goal is Heaven. Run your Race to the best of your ability. Show love to others and if you can win people over for God in a peaceful way, do so.

Do not do God’s JOB for Him. He is more than capable of doing His job himself. 

When Love Arrives

I fell in love with spoken word poetry sometime last year. I woke up early one morning to a post from one of my amazing blogger friends, A. She posted this video of spoken word poetry by Alysia Harris called ‘That Girl’ (which I think everyone should see. Links down below.)

I normally don’t read posts that early in the morning but I couldn’t stand up so I just decided to read it and watch the video. I was in awe of Alysia. I had never heard that sort of pain in someone’s voice and for the rest of the day, I couldn’t focus.

I showed a few of my friends the video and they were just quiet at the end. It was so beautiful and for the rest of the day, I kept on looking at videos of spoken poetry.

Then one day, I stumbled on Sarah Kay. The first poem I saw of her was ‘If I had a daughter’. I sent it to my mum immediately and I think my mum sent it to my sister. Sarah Kay has a way of getting the words across and you can tell that it is from her heart.

This video is one that she did with a fellow spoken word poet and a friend of hers, Phil Kaye. I can’t exactly describe the humour and the love and the truth behind it but you take a look and judge.

I decided to share this because it is very special and I believe that everyone should see it. It gives you a different perspective on love.

I made a transcript of the poem for those that prefer it or for those that want to read it while listening:

Sarah and Phil: I knew exactly what Love looked like…in seventh grade.

Sarah: Even though I hadn’t met Love yet, if Love had wandered into my home room,I would have recognised him at first glance. Love..wore a hemp necklace.

Phil: I would have recognised her at first glance, Love wore a tight French Braid.

S: Love played acoustic guitar and knew all my favourite Beatle songs.

P: Love wasn’t afraid to ride the bus with me

S&P: And I knew…

S: I just must be searching the wrong classrooms

P: Just must be checking the wrong hallways. She was there, I was sure of it.

S: If only I could find him

S&P: But when Love finally showed up

P: She had a bull-cut…

S: He wore the same clothes everyday for a week

P: Love hated the bus.

S: Love didn’t know anything about the Beatles

S&P: Instead..

P: Every time I tried to kiss Love

S&P: Our teeth got in the way

S: Love became the reason I lied to my parents

P: I’m going to…Ben’s House

S: Love had terrible rhythm on the dance floor but made sure we never missed a slow song.

P: Love waited by the phone because she knew if her father picked up it would be…

S :(in a deep voice)Helloo…

P: (breathing heavily)

S: (in a deep voice): Helloo…

P: (still breathing heavily)

S: (in a deep voice): I guess they hung up.

P: And Love grew..

S: Stretched like a trampoline..

P: Love changed…

S: Love disappeared…slowly, like baby teeth – Losing parts of me I thought I needed…

P: Love vanished like an amateur magician – Everyone could see the trap door but me…

S:..like a flat tyre – There were places I had planned on going

S&P: But my plans didn’t matter

S: Love stayed away for years…and when Love finally re-appeared…I barely recognised him

P: Love smelt different now…had darker eyes…

S:…a broader back, Love came with freckles I didn’t recognise…

P:…new birthmarks, a softer voice…

S: Now there were new sleeping patterns…

P:…new favourite books

S: Love had songs that reminded him of someone else

P: songs, Love didn’t like to listen to…

S&P: So did I…

P: But we found a park bench that fit us perfectly

S: We found jokes that make us laugh

P: And now, Love makes me fresh home-made chocolate chip cookies…

S:…but Love will probably finish most of them for a midnight snack

P: Love looks great in lingerie but still likes to wear her retainer

S: Love is a terrible driver but a great navigator

P: Love knows where she’s going, it just might take her two hours longer than she planned

S: Love is messier now…

P:…not as simple

S: Love uses the word ‘boobs’ in front of my parents

P: Love chews too loudly

S: Love leaves the cap off the toothpaste

P: Love uses smiley faces in her text messages

S: And turns out…

S&P: Love Shits!

S: But Love also cries and Love will tell you ‘You are Beautiful’…

P:…and mean it…

S:…over and over again…

S: When you first wake up…

My Maya


Ill start by saying that this is my 100th post and I am using it to honour a woman who touched my life. Maya Angelou was more than a woman that I read about on the pages of a book or watched on a screen. She was like a second mother in my head. I imagined myself sitting by her feet and listen to her speak. I imagined myself talking to her about life, boys, God and everything else in between.

I had heard about her time and time again but I had never really known so much about her. However, one day, I was thinking of the books I would use for my English A level coursework. We were to choose three and I had already chosen: Wuthering Heights, Little Women and Purple Hibiscus. Deadline was fast approaching and I had only read Purple Hibiscus. Wuthering Heights and Little Women were just confusing me and I needed something that would keep me interested. 

So I started to think of some other books and then my friend suggested: The Help and I know why the caged bird sings by Maya Angelou. I had watched The Help already so I knew what it was about but I had not read this book by Maya. My friend gave me a little summary on what the book was about and she said I would love it. I decided to get it. 

I read the book and I was so into it. I got to know this woman and understand her. From the way she wrote, I could feel her wisdom. I never had the time to read the remaining autobiographies but I read some of her poems like: Phenomenal Woman and Still I Rise. I am not such a big fan of poetry but this woman made me see poetry in a different light. My God, she was such a wise woman. She was like the ‘Solomon of our time’ and she proved that you can go through the hardest life and still come out strong.

I wish I had met her and I wish I had known about her longer than I did. I am so honored to have shared this earth with this wonderful woman. I am so glad that she was alive when I was born. I am so thankful to God for producing such beauty and such wisdom. I am filled with tears because I can’t believe that such wisdom has departed this world. I am sure that she is dining with the angels because that is where she belongs. I’m sure God and her will have so much to talk about.

A Cry

We pass by each other

Look Around The Corner

I love watching TV shows A LOT. I don’t really have so much of a life so my TV shows keep me company. Recently, I have been extremely bored and lonely so I decided to start watching some new shows since my own shows are taking their hiatus. 

So, I started watching How I Met Your Mother. Actually, this show isn’t exactly new to me. Its one of those shows that I don’t follow but anytime it pops up on TV, I’m more than happy to watch it. So, I heard the show was coming to an end and like most people, I was very curious to know who The Mother was and I’m not even really a fan of the show.

So I was talking to my friend some days ago that is a fan of the show and I asked her who the mother was. So, she basically gave me a plot of the final season and I was really excited and decided to watch it – Just Season 9 though. So, I started about two days ago and got hooked.

I have to say that it made me very very emotional. I cried a couple of times and today was the absolute worst cause I just finished it. (Pause: Okay, ‘Always be my baby’ my Mariah Carey just came on and this is probably one of my best songs on earth. So, if the rest of this post sounds really mushy, I am so sorry).

Ted (the main character of the show) who is very much like me has been looking for love. Actually, he had found it but unfortunately, the love of his life was going to marry his best friend. However, he met this amazing woman. Now, he had almost ran into this woman on numerous occasions. It was always a close call but they never met.

I mean, he had been to her house when he was dating her room mate but he couldn’t meet her because his date threw him out and as he was leaving, she was entering the bathroom so he didn’t meet her. There were several more occasions when he came close that I wouldn’t go into right now until the day he stepped up to her on that train platform.

These two people had been through so much. She hadn’t dated in years because the love of her life died and even when she decided to date, she didn’t fall in love with him until she met Ted. Its just so cute that there were two people who were so alike in the world but just never met until God and the universe decided that it was finally time.

It just made me feel so much better about life and love. The person you could spend the rest of your life could have been right beside you all along but you both just haven’t met. God is such a genius. He just designs everything perfectly and this show showed me just that.

Whenever you feel like everything is all messed up, just look around the corner and your blessings could just be right there.
