TV TALK: What am I watching?

Hi guys,

So, by now, you know how much I love watching TV shows. I mean, it’s basically my life. Lol. It’s all I do and because I am a writer who is keen on writing scripts for movies and tv, it is just something that fuels my creative engine and I am always keen to share what I am watching with others.

A couple of weeks ago, I shared the four shows that were on my binge-watching line-up. You can check the post out here. Anyway, I’m done with those ones and I wanted to share the ones that I am currently watching. So, in case you have been looking for shows to watch, I am your girl! So, hope I can convince you to start watching these ones if you haven’t already.

Let’s get into it people.

  1. DEAR WHITE PEOPLE

So, this tv series is based off of the movie of the same name. Now, I’ll be honest. When I first heard of the TV show, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to watch it, not for any other reason but for the simple fact that I couldn’t get into the movie. When the movie first came out, I was excited to see it especially because Tyler James Williams was in it and I absolutely love him. However, I started watching it and I just couldn’t get into it so I never finished it. Anyway, long story short, the tv show came out and I wasn’t sure if it will be like a continuation of the movie or something so I wasn’t sure. However, I heard so many great things about it and some of my friends were telling me how awesome it is and I decided to give it a try.

I have watched just one episode and I have to tell you that it is so amazing. I love the show. It is a show that portrays how students of colour at Winchester University which is predominantly white, try to navigate through college life inspite of social injustice. One of the many things I love about the show is how articulate these students are, especially one of the lead characters,  Samantha WhiteShe knows how to explain herself clearly and concisely without having to raise her voice. I wish I was that articulate. Many times I try to speak or write about certain things but I never really know how to put it. Even in writing this, I have written and deleted over and over again because I want you guys to understand what I am trying to say but this girl does it and does it so well and it is nice to see a strong black young woman speak her peace.

The cast is so amazing and it is nice to see all these beautiful black people on TV. I appreciate it and I love it. Anyway, this show is bomb. I have only seen one episode and I cannot wait to keep on watching . The cast includes, Logan Browning, Brandon P. Bell, DeRon Horton and many other amazing people. Please check it out as it is so necessary to watch especially in the times that we live in. The show just completed its first season and you can watch it on Netflix.

2. MODERN FAMILY

Remember how I said previously, that I enjoy having a comedy show in my line-up to ease up the tension of the other shows. Well, Modern Family has taken that spot in my line-up. I have actually been watching Modern Family for years but halfway through the 8th season, I just stopped catching up. It’s not that it wasn’t good; it’s just that I got distracted by other shows and by the time I kept forgetting to watch and it just kept piling up. Anyway, I decided to complete the 8th season since I have missed so much and I have been enjoying it and laughing so hard.

Modern Family is a sitcom that is done in the style of a mockumentary. It follows the lives of patriarch, Jay Pritchett and his family which includes his children and their spouses and their children as well. Anyway, the show is so funny and so light-hearted and has some seriously iconic comedic moments. If you have never watched it, you are in luck because you have eight whole seasons to catch up on. The show features an amazing cast such as Ed O’Neill, Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen and so many other wonderful  people who bring the characters to life.

3. JANE THE VIRGIN

I will admit, when this show first came out in 2014, I was not board. I can’t remember if I watched the trailer but I knew the premise of the show and I thought it will be better suited as a movie than as a show. Now, that I think about it, I can’t help but knock myself in the head for ever thinking that. When Gina Rodriguez won a Golden Globe for the show a couple of years ago, I knew that there had to be something to the show but I still never watched it.

My sister and my brother basically put me on to the show again this year. I was already planning on giving the show a go anyway sometime this year but my siblings kept on telling me how amazing it is and out gave me more of a reason to watch the show. You guys, this show is awesome.

Let me just give you guys a little premise to the show. So, basically the show is a modern American take on a telenovela. Side note: I remember this telenovela I used to watch in secondary school called Second Chance, also known as El Cuerpo del Deseo. It was crazy but boy, was I hooked. I loved it.

Anyway, back to the show. The show is about Jane who is a virgin but gets accidentally inseminated with another man’s sperm which results in a pregnancy and causes a series of events that can only be seen in a telenovela. Lol.

I love the show so so much and one of the many reasons I love the show is because of all the TV shows I have ever watched (and ya’ll know I watch a lot), I have never related to a character the way I relate to Jane. I mean, it sounds crazy but there are so many aspects of Jane’s life that I find myself going through at the moment and it has really helped me to just feel better about myself and just the progress of my life in general. It has helped me in my writing and in so many other ways.

I am glad in a way that I only started watching this show recently because it really could not have come at a better time and I can binge-watch it.

Anyway, the show is amazing and I would recommend it to any and everyone. One thing I love about the show is that it is clear that the writers have thought about everything before hand. They know how they want the story to go and so there are no plot-holes i it and I love when writers do that. It shows that they don’t take the audience for fools and I really really appreciate it.

Anyway, the show features Gina Rodriguez, Brett Dier, Andrea Navedo and so many others. The show just completed its third season. You can watch it all on Netflix.

4. GRIMM

Last and definitely not the least is Grimm. I am a fan of fantasy shows. Some of my very best shows have been fantasy. I loved Charmed. It is one of my favourite shows of all time and even though Once Upon a Time can have its moments, I still love it because I am caught up in all the magic of it. The thing about fantasy is that, it is already far-fetched. I mean, you can’t really imagine any of it happening in the real world and so for me, it is easy to let go of things that might seem a bit too crazy even for the show. Anyway, I digress.

This is one of those shows that I had on my radar that I would watch one day and then my sister gave me more reason to watch it because she really likes it. So, I started watching it and I love it. I mean, it is a bit more gory than my other fantasy shows and it is not as magical but it combines two genres that I love which is fantasy and crime and I love how they mesh together.

So, Grimm is about an easy-going smart detective who finds out that he is also a Grimm which means that he can see these fairy-tale type species that exist within our world. Does that make sense? Lol. The show is inspired by Grimms’ fairy tales and if you are familiar with them, you would understand what I mean. I am familiar with some Grimm fairytales such as Hansel and Gretel but I don’t know a lot of them.

The show is really good. I really enjoy watching it and it is similar to Once Upon a Time but a lot more intense and as I said earlier, gory. So, I really think that it is worth the watch.

The show features David Guintoli, Silas Weir Mitchell (who was Haywire in Prison Break. I didn’t really like his character too much on Prison Break but I love him in Grimm. He cracks me up), Reggie Lee ( who was William Kim on Prison Break as well. I did not like his character on Prison Break at all. He irritated me but I like him on this show), Bitsie Tulloch and so many other amazing people.

The show just ended this year. It has six seasons and  you can watch it up till its fifth season on Netflix.

So, what do you think of my line-up? Is there anyone you would watch? Is there any one you already watch? What do you think about it? Would you recommend any other shows for me to watch? Please, let me know. I would love to hear it all. You know how much I love TV shows. Will let you know when I have another line-up.

Till then my darlings,

Have a wonderful evening. ❤

  2. Hi Dolly!
I am not always very good at relaxing and so don’t tend to watch that much stuff, but when I do it is mainly Netflix, we don’t have a tv. I tend to watch only one thing at a time and only something I really like. I loved Orange is the new black, and series one of Once upon a time. I also liked series one of Grace and Frankie.
Anyway, a couple of weekends ago I came down with a really bad cold and had to take to my bed for the best part of two days (very unusual for me) and I realised how brilliant Netflix on a tablet is for such situations. I watched the whole season of Dear White People and I loved it. I hope Netflix are making another season, do you know if they are?
Right now, I am only watching Bojack Horseman. I am aware that the new season of Walking Dead is out and all I have to do is buy it on google play, but the last season was so harrowing- I spent a lot of it with my eyes shut or even having to leave the room. Also, Stranger Things, I enjoyed that and the new series is out so I will probably watch that at some point. I also really liked Sense8, but that’s a sore point since it got cancelled right in the middle of the story…
Thank you for sharing your recommendations.
    Best wishes,

    1. Hey babe. Please, accept my apologies for not replying to this sooner. I had been away for this blog for longer than I hoped to be. I am so glad that you liked the post. It gives me great pleasure. I also hope that they make another series of Dear White people. I am more of a home person than anything and so TV is my outlet. I don’t watch Sense8 but I heard that they made a two part finale to finish up the story. I hope that gave you the closure you needed. I hate when shows I love get cancelled. Thank you so much once more for taking the time to comment. It really does fill my heart with joy. Please, do come back. ❤
